What can I expect from an Online Counselling Appointment?

I feel like the COVID-19 pandemic brought us a lot of things: some good, some bad, some very ugly. Of the many changes and innovations that came about during this period, the telehealth appointment is one that I feel most grateful for. Telehealth has made it easier than ever to access support services like counselling. Online counselling makes it easier to fit your counselling appointments into your schedule. It’s simpler to keep your appointments on days when your motivation is low or your mental health is flagging. And it means that you can access specialist services even if they aren’t in your local area.

Even with all of the positives that come with online counselling, you might feel hesitant to book an online appointment if you aren’t sure what to expect. I’m here to walk you through a typical online counselling appointment and answer some of the most commonly asked questions.

Are telehealth sessions secure?

With the sensitive nature of the information that’s being shared during counselling, it’s understandable that you’d want to make sure that your session is secure. Confidentiality is a top priority for me, and I’ve done my research to choose a telehealth platform that is safe and secure. I use Doxy.me, which is a platform that was developed for doctors during the pandemic. It is end-to-end encrypted and complies with all Privacy Act requirements. You can be confident that our sessions will remain private and confidential, even when conducted online.

Do I need to download any software or subscribe to an app?

Nope! The day before your session, I’ll send you an email with a link to my virtual waiting room. When you click the link it’ll take you straight to the Doxy.me platform so that you can set up your microphone and camera before our session begins. There’s no need to install apps or software, your appointment is just a single click away.

Aren’t telehealth appointments kind of impersonal?

It’s so important that you feel comfortable and connected during your counselling appointment. Some people might worry that an online appointment is a bit impersonal because you’re not in the same room together, but that’s really not the case.

I always set up my camera so that you can see me clearly and ensure that my microphone is working so that you can hear every word that I say. It’s amazing how you can establish a feeling of connection and safety with someone without being in the same physical space. All of my clients who have been hesitant to try telehealth counselling have told me that after the first session they’re very comfortable to continue with online appointments. I make a lot of effort to ensure that my online appointments are as engaging, safe and connected as my in-person appointments.

Where can I do my telehealth appointment?

As long as you’ve got a device and an internet connection, you can do a telehealth appointment. Ideally, you’ll set yourself up somewhere comfortable and private, where you’re not likely to be interrupted. Most people will do their appointments in their bedroom, living room or office. I’ve had clients do their sessions from their car, and on one occasion I saw a client who was tucked up in bed! The ideal place for your online counselling session is wherever you feel comfortable and able to connect.

How long does an online appointment last?

All of my appointments are the same length: 45 minutes. We will usually start the session by briefly reviewing what we talked about in our last appointment and revisiting your goals. If it’s your first appointment, I’ll run through a little bit of information about counselling in general, answer any questions you might have and then I’ll ask you what you’d like to talk about. The session usually flows pretty naturally from there, and I’ll give you a reminder when we’re near the end of the session so that we can begin wrapping things up. I’ll also give you an opportunity to ask questions and book another appointment if you’d like to see me again.

Telehealth has really opened up the options for service delivery, and makes it so much easier to attend your counselling sessions and get the support that you need. If you have any questions about telehealth counselling, or if you’d like to book an appointment, please feel encouraged to get in touch with me.
